About World Wildlife Day: –

On 20 December 2013, at its 68th session, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 3rd March will be celebrated as World Wildlife Day. It will be the day of signature of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as UN World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution also designated the CITES Secretariat as the facilitator for the global observance of this special day for wildlife on the UN calendar.

World Wildlife Day has now become the most important global annual event dedicated to wildlife.

This practice is endangering the wildlife. So, to protect it, an organization like the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the United Nations (UN) came together to end these kinds of crimes. For that, they promote the day by asking people to donate. And this donation money will be used to Back a ranger. Their tagline – donate money to help rangers who protect endangered animals get equipment and training they need to stop wildlife crime. Sign pledges urging governments to strengthen their laws to stop wildlife crime.

World Wildlife day also known as WWF was introduced by the
United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in their 68th session assembly. On date 20th December 2013, the assembly session took place and it was proclaimed with strong purpose that on 3rd March world will celebrate World Wildlife Day.

The sole intention for introducing this observance was to create an awareness among the people all around the world to help and raise the importance of wildlife creature like wild animals, plants, forest, trees etc.

The wildlife on our earth is very important and earth’s wellness is directly connected to human wellness. There should be a balance and people around the world should know about this fact.

These are some facts about Wildlife on the occasion of Wildlife day.

  • According to the UN, the biggest threat to wildlife is habitat loss, as well as overgrazing, farming and development. Habitat loss accounts for 80% of the loss in biological diversity.
  • Most endangered of all may be the ivory-billed woodpecker, last reported to have been seen in 2014 in Arkansas and Florida.
  • At the current rates of extinction, nearly 20% of the world’s species could be extinct within the next 30 years.
  • Colonies of wild scorpions have been sighted in Britain, mainly near ports in Kent.
  • The International Union for Conservation of Nature has listed 2,599 species, subspecies and sub-populations of critically endangered animals.
  • Elephants, pangolins, rhinoceros, sharks and tigers are among the most critically poached and trafficked species in the world.
  • The Hawaiian crow was declared extinct in the wild in 2002, but a plan to repopulate the area was begun last year with birds bred in captivity.
  • Martha, the world’s last passenger pigeon, died in Cincinnati Zoo on September 1, 1914. 
  • About ten people a year are killed by sharks but about 100 million sharks are killed by people.
